RAWALPINDI: In a targeted intelligence-based operation (IBO) in North Waziristan, security forces neutralized six terrorists and wounded six others, according to a statement from the military’s media wing on Sunday.

The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) reported that the operation took place on Saturday in the Spinwam area, following intelligence about the presence of terrorists.

“During the operation, troops engaged the terrorists effectively, resulting in the elimination of six and injuries to six more,” the ISPR statement noted.

Weapons and ammunition were seized from the terrorists, who were involved in numerous attacks on security forces and the killing of civilians.

The ISPR also announced that a follow-up sanitization operation is underway to clear any remaining threats, reiterating Pakistan’s commitment to eradicating terrorism.

The country continues to face heightened militant activity, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Balochistan, following the Taliban’s takeover of neighboring Afghanistan.

On Saturday, a suicide bombing at a Quetta railway station left at least 27 people dead and more than 60 injured, highlighting the ongoing challenges.

A recent report from the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) revealed a sharp 90% increase in fatalities from terrorist violence and counter-terrorism actions in the third quarter of 2024. Between July and September, 722 people lost their lives—including civilians, security forces, and outlaws—and 615 others were injured in 328 incidents.

Notably, 97% of these fatalities occurred in KP and Balochistan, the highest rate in a decade, with over 92% of incidents recorded in the same provinces.
