Security report to be submitted to Border Management Committee chief
The Pakistan–Afghanistan border at Chaman remained closed on Saturday following overnight cross-border firing, leaving hundreds of travellers, traders, and families stuck on both sides as security forces tightened control in the area.
Security personnel from the Frontier Corps and other units in Pakistan increased their presence at key checkpoints after an exchange of fire with Afghan forces late Friday. Afghan authorities similarly bolstered their positions in Spin Boldak, prompting fears among locals of a prolonged confrontation.
Scores of Afghan nationals waiting to return home were left stranded for hours at the Friendship Gate, with many having waited for days. Travellers voiced concerns about the cold weather and inadequate facilities.
“We were ready to cross early morning, but the gate didn’t open. Families with children are facing the worst hardships,” said one passenger at the terminal.
Local officials said a detailed assessment of the security situation will be sent to the Chairman of the Border Management and Master Plan Committee.
At least three civilians — including a woman — were wounded in the Friday night clashes, which continued for several hours. Medical teams in Chaman have been treating the injured and monitoring developments.
Following explosions in Kabul the previous night, Afghan Taliban forces — reportedly aided by elements of the TTP — launched coordinated attacks across multiple border points, including Chaman, Angoor Adda, Bajaur, Kurram, Dir, Chitral, and Baramcha.
Border hostilities have erupted several times this year. On October 8, tensions surged after blasts in Kabul, allegedly tied to Pakistani airstrikes on TTP leaders.
At least 23 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the ensuing clashes, while Pakistan claimed more than 200 Afghan fighters were also killed. The Pak–Afghan Friendship Gate sustained damage during the exchange of fire. Pakistan sealed its crossings soon afterward, and both sides later agreed to a 48-hour ceasefire on October 16.
