The Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rain and snowfall over higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir from October 6 to 10, with activity peaking on October 9 and 10.

Srinagar: Parts of Jammu and Kashmir are likely to experience a fresh spell of rain and snowfall over the coming days as a Western Disturbance influences the region, with thunderstorms, hail and gusty winds also possible at isolated places, according to the Meteorological Department.

From October 6 to 8, the department has forecast partly to generally cloudy conditions, with light rain at a few places and light snowfall over the higher reaches. Thunder and gusty winds are also likely during this period, particularly over higher altitudes.

Weather activity is expected to intensify on October 9 and 10, when generally cloudy skies are likely to prevail, accompanied by light to moderate rain at scattered to many places and light snowfall over the higher reaches. Thunder and gusty winds are also expected. From October 11 to 14, the department has forecast partly cloudy conditions across the region.

The independent weather forecaster Kashmir Weather said thundershowers could occur at some places in the plains, while snowfall is possible over the extreme higher reaches. It added that temperatures have remained significantly above normal in recent days and that hailstorms and strong winds cannot be ruled out at a few locations.

The department has advised people to ensure safe storage of apples and paddy in view of the expected weather conditions between October 6 and 10, as wet weather and gusty winds could affect standing and harvested crops. No rainfall was recorded at the listed weather stations in the region during the latest reporting period.

According to Monday’s readings, temperatures remained above normal at several places in the region. Srinagar recorded a maximum of 30.8 degrees Celsius, which was 5.3 degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 12.3 degrees Celsius, 3.3 degrees above normal. Qazigund recorded a maximum of 31 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 10.2 degrees Celsius, while Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 26.6 and a minimum of 7.4 degrees Celsius.

In the higher reaches, Gulmarg recorded a maximum of 23 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 9 degrees Celsius. In Jammu, the maximum temperature was 33 degrees Celsius, 0.6 degrees above normal, while the minimum settled at 23 degrees Celsius, 2.1 degrees above normal. The department said the incoming weather system would bring the temperatures down toward seasonal norms.
