Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Sunday removed Jhelum Deputy Commissioner Mir Raza Ozgen after intermediate examination papers were postponed ahead of her scheduled visit to the city, saying the education of students must never suffer because of an official visit.

The action followed a letter from the deputy commissioner to the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISE) Rawalpindi, in which he said the scheduled examinations could not be conducted because of the chief minister’s visit and asked for the papers to be rescheduled.

Maryam Nawaz took notice of the matter and ordered the removal of the deputy commissioner. She made it clear that neither markets, shops, businesses nor institutions would be closed in connection with her visit, and that the movement of the public would not be disrupted either.

She said the Chief Minister’s Secretariat should be informed in advance if any such step was ever considered necessary, and directed officials to treat teachers and students with respect and to reassure them rather than create difficulties for them.

Visit to Jhelum on November 10

The Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education Rawalpindi conducts intermediate examinations for the Rawalpindi division, which includes Jhelum district. The postponed papers will now have to be rescheduled by the board.

The chief minister is scheduled to visit Jhelum on November 10, where she will address students at a ceremony at Degree College Pind Dadan Khan. During the visit, she is expected to announce a laptop for every student who secured more than 65 per cent marks, the construction of a girls’ hostel and a degree college, and a 60 million rupees endowment fund for the college.

The announcements are aimed at supporting students in the district and improving educational facilities, particularly for girls, who often have to travel long distances for higher education.

Officials in Jhelum have been directed to make arrangements for the visit without disrupting normal life in the city. The district administration will now make fresh arrangements for the postponed papers in coordination with the Rawalpindi board.
