LAHORE: In a groundbreaking move, Lahore police have introduced women-led cycle squads to enhance security in bustling markets during the final 10 days of Ramazan. With Eid shopping in full swing, authorities have identified 92 crime-prone areas and deployed 1,000 male officers alongside female personnel to curb street crime.
Police officials devised this strategy in response to the surge of families flocking to commercial hubs, shopping centers, and bazaars. Criminals often exploit such crowds, particularly targeting families and individuals withdrawing cash from ATMs. To counteract these threats, law enforcement has reinforced security, with a special focus on protecting female shoppers.
For the first time, female officers have been assigned to cycle patrols, operating in both uniform and plainclothes. Their primary role is to prevent harassment and ensure a safe shopping environment. Strict legal action will be taken against anyone caught engaging in misconduct or criminal behavior.
Lahore police have rolled out a comprehensive security plan, stationing over 4,000 personnel in various capacities across the city. These include specialized patrolling teams, undercover officers, and rapid-response units designed to swiftly tackle suspicious activities.
To tighten control over criminal elements, surveillance has been heightened, with a particular focus on individuals with prior offenses. Enhanced police presence has been established at 65 high-traffic shopping districts, ensuring greater security for citizens.
A total of 226 checkpoints have been set up at key locations to deter crime, particularly targeting robbery and snatching incidents. Law enforcement has synchronized bank operating hours with heightened patrols, deploying mobile units around banks, marketplaces, and commercial zones. Advanced monitoring tools, including drone cameras and night vision binoculars, are also being utilized to maintain security, especially during nighttime.
Lahore Operations DIG Faisal Kamran stated that six SPs, 22 sub-divisional officers, 83 SHOs, and 3,367 constables, including 34 female officers, are actively implementing the security plan. Elite Force, Dolphin Squad, and other rapid-response teams have ramped up patrolling across critical areas.
He emphasized that more than 90 crime hotspots have been mapped across the city’s six divisions, with over 1,000 officers strategically positioned. Additionally, 55 locations have been marked for checkpoints and enhanced patrols to address the issue of reckless motorbike stunts.
These security measures were introduced to accommodate the increased public activity leading up to Eidul Fitr. Divisional SPs have been directed to ensure a secure and peaceful atmosphere for families, with an integrated security framework leveraging both manpower and technology.
Authorities encourage citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior or criminal activity through the Police Helpline 15 to help maintain safety during the festive season.
