The unrest erupted a day after protests in Karachi over reports of the assassination of Ali Khamenei. Demonstrators gathered near the consulate on Mai Kolachi Road, where tensions escalated after a group pushed toward the outer perimeter of the diplomatic compound. Law enforcement personnel responded, leading to deadly confrontations.
According to police officials, three First Information Reports (FIRs) have been lodged on behalf of the state against unidentified individuals under terrorism-related provisions.
A senior officer said the first FIR names “150–200 unknown protesters” accused of vandalizing property at the consulate, engaging in arson, and opening fire. The second case concerns the burning of a nearby police post and related acts of arson. The third FIR pertains to violence at Native Jetty Bridge, where unidentified armed individuals allegedly fired shots that injured two women and several others.
The cases have been registered under Sections 302 (premeditated murder) and 324 (attempted murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code, along with Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act. No arrests have been made so far.
Meanwhile, senior police officials have faced disciplinary action over alleged negligence. Inspector General of Police Javed Alam Odho ordered the suspension and removal of several officers following an initial inquiry.
A statement from the Central Police Office said the Keamari SSP has been recommended for removal, while the Keamari DSP and SHOs of Docks, SITE-B, KPT, and Jackson police stations, along with the in-charge of the foreign security cell, have been suspended.
In addition, a six-member high-level committee has been constituted to conduct a transparent investigation into the incident. The panel is headed by the additional IG of the Counter-Terrorism Department and includes senior officials from the Special Branch, Headquarters, and the CTD investigation wing.
The committee has been directed to submit a comprehensive report detailing the circumstances surrounding the violence within seven days.
