The Punjab Home Department announced on Friday that dedicated anti-drone units will be created in every district of the province to strengthen security and surveillance capabilities.

The initiative was approved last week by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who stressed the importance of adopting preventive strategies rather than merely responding after terrorist incidents occur.
According to the department’s statement, the new units will monitor districts from the air using specialized fleets of surveillance drones. In addition, each district will be equipped with an advanced anti-drone system operating under the supervision of the respective District Police Officer (DPO).
Authorities said both surveillance drones and counter-drone equipment will be deployed according to the security requirements of individual districts.
The anti-drone technology will be capable of neutralizing hostile or suspicious drones by using electronic jammers, effectively disabling devices operated by enemies or miscreants.
A spokesperson for the Home Department said the move aims to address modern counter-terrorism challenges while ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order across the province.
The department also noted that police capabilities are being expanded to enhance aerial monitoring and improve overall security.
Meanwhile, Section 144 remains enforced throughout Punjab.
Following incidents in which Afghan Taliban forces reportedly used rudimentary drones to strike targets in the region, authorities have imposed a nationwide restriction on flying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Earlier, the Punjab Home Department had already introduced a 30-day ban on drones and UAV operations across the province starting February 25.
However, the notification clarified that the restriction does not apply to small drones used for indoor event coverage, such as inside halls or marquees, and it also excludes drones operated by intelligence and law-enforcement agencies.
