The United Kingdom has introduced sweeping visa restrictions, suspending study visas for citizens of Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan, while also halting work visas for Afghan nationals as part of a broader effort to curb immigration.

Announcing the move on Tuesday, March 3, British authorities described the measures as an “emergency brake” aimed at addressing the sharp rise in asylum applications from individuals who initially entered the country through legal visa channels. The government said the decision was taken amid growing global tensions and concerns over national security.
Immigration continues to be a highly sensitive political issue in Britain. Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s administration has pledged to tighten oversight of the immigration system, particularly as the right-leaning Reform UK party gains momentum in opinion polls.
The Home Office stated that asylum claims submitted by students from Afghanistan, Cameroon, Myanmar, and Sudan have surged more than fivefold between 2021 and 2025. It further revealed that asylum applications from Afghans holding work visas now exceed the total number of such visas granted.
Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood defended the policy shift, emphasizing that while Britain remains committed to offering protection to those escaping conflict and persecution, the visa framework must not be misused. She described the suspension as an unprecedented but necessary step to prevent exploitation of the system.
Asylum Applications Surge
Government data shows that asylum claims from individuals entering on legal visas have more than tripled since 2021, accounting for 39 percent of the roughly 100,000 applications filed last year. Authorities reported that nearly 16,000 people from the four affected countries are currently receiving state support, including more than 6,000 housed in hotels. The annual cost of asylum accommodation has reached an estimated £4 billion (approximately $5.34 billion), intensifying pressure on public finances.
The new restrictions are scheduled to come into force on March 26. Officials indicated that once the asylum system is stabilized, the government intends to introduce capped “safe and legal routes” for entry.
Since 2021, the UK has resettled over 37,000 Afghans under humanitarian schemes and granted approximately 190,000 humanitarian visas last year alone. The government also noted that it has secured cooperation agreements with Angola, Namibia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo for the return of their nationals, following warnings that visa access could be withdrawn.
Starmer has previously argued that Britain’s asylum policies are comparatively more lenient than those in parts of Europe, potentially acting as a “pull factor” for migrants. In November, his government outlined plans to make refugee status temporary and accelerate the removal of individuals who enter the country unlawfully.
