MIRPUR (AJK): Senior officials of the Mirpur Divisional Administration and WAPDA held a high-level meeting on Wednesday to address long-standing rehabilitation and compensation issues faced by Mangla Dam affectees, with a focus on resolving the matters on a priority basis.
The meeting reviewed the release of compensation amounts in line with court verdicts related to the Mangla Dam Raising Project. Key issues discussed included the determination of market rates for houses affected by the project, payment of awarded compensation, repair of dikes and link roads, and the provision of water from the Jarri Kass pocket of the Mangla Dam reservoir, according to official sources.
Commissioner Mirpur Division Raja Tahir Mumtaz chaired the session, which was attended by General Manager WAPDA Mangla Fakhar Jahan, Director Mangla Dam Housing Authority Chaudhry Amjad Iqbal, Director Works MDHA Engineer Inamul Haq, Collector Affairs Mangla Dam Raja Tariq Mahmood, and other senior WAPDA officials. Representatives of the Mangla Dam affectees and additional displaced families also participated in the discussions.
Participants examined various court decisions related to compensation cases, the progress on applications submitted by affectees to WAPDA, and payments for housing contracts awarded under court directives at prevailing market rates. The condition and repair of dikes and link roads constructed under the dam-raising project were also reviewed.
The meeting further assessed the status of pending development schemes in resettlement towns established for Mangla Dam affectees and emphasized the need for their timely completion.
It was agreed that monthly review meetings would be held to monitor progress on all outstanding issues and to ensure implementation of recommendations made in previous sessions. WAPDA was directed to finalize compensation assessments for disputed housing cases in accordance with market values, while law enforcement authorities were instructed to immediately remove encroachments on WAPDA-owned land around the Mangla Dam reservoir and adjoining areas.
