KARACHI: At least 20 people lost their lives and eight others were injured after a powerful thunderstorm struck Karachi on Wednesday night, according to police officials.

The city was hit by heavy rain and strong winds, leading to multiple fatalities caused by collapsing walls, falling debris, and damaged structures. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) attributed the severe weather to an active westerly wave affecting large parts of the country.

Additional Inspector General Azad Khan stated that 13 deaths occurred when a wall collapsed in Saeedabad, while two more people died in a similar incident in Quaidabad. In Keamari, two individuals were injured due to another wall collapse.

Separate incidents of roof collapses also proved fatal. One person died and three were injured in Gulistan-i-Jauhar, while another collapse in Mominabad, Orangi Town, resulted in one death and two injuries. In Malir’s Sukhan area, one person was killed in a similar incident. Meanwhile, in Clifton, one individual died and another was injured after being struck by debris during the storm. A lightning strike in Shah Latif Town also claimed one life.

The PMD has warned that unstable weather conditions are likely to persist, with more rain expected in Karachi and other parts of Sindh. Over the next few days, the city is expected to experience cloudy skies along with intermittent thunderstorms and occasional heavy downpours.

Temperature forecasts suggest highs between 24°C and 26°C, with humidity levels remaining high during the day. Winds are expected to shift directions, adding to the unsettled conditions.

Rainfall data showed Keamari receiving the highest accumulation at 8mm by Thursday morning, followed by Surjani Town. However, earlier in the storm, Korangi recorded significantly heavier rainfall at 55.6mm, with Nazimabad and PAF Masroor Base also receiving substantial amounts.

Weather conditions are expected to improve slightly by Friday, bringing sunnier skies and a rise in temperatures. However, cloudy weather and isolated showers may return on Saturday, which is likely to coincide with the first day of Eid.

The PMD has also forecast rain and thunderstorms in several districts across Sindh, including Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Tharparker, and Sukkur. Farmers have been advised to take precautionary measures to protect their crops, while residents have been warned about the risk of lightning strikes in isolated areas.

The rainfall began around 9pm on Wednesday, affecting nearly all districts of Karachi. While some areas experienced moderate showers, others saw lighter rainfall. Despite this, strong winds, thunder, and lightning created panic among residents across the city.
