MIRPUR (Hayat News): British-based NGO Muslim Hands International has launched an innovative “Solid Waste Management Project” in Mirpur, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). This groundbreaking initiative aims to transform the region’s approach to waste collection and management.

Speaking to APP, Qamar Atta Raja, Head of the Media Wing at Muslim Hands International, highlighted the project’s dual focus on waste collection and resource recovery. “Beyond collection, we are emphasizing recycling, reprocessing, and composting to ensure waste materials are repurposed effectively,” he stated.

As part of the initiative, every registered household receives two designated dustbins—one for kitchen waste and another for general waste such as plastics, glass, and tins. These bins are provided free of charge, with households paying a nominal monthly service fee for waste collection.

“Source segregation at the household level is crucial to maximizing the benefits of recycling and composting,” Qamar explained. “Our team ensures regular, multiple weekly waste collections to maintain a clean environment and optimize processing efficiency.”

He further emphasized the broader environmental impact of the project, noting that it supports the transition from a linear economy to a sustainable circular model. This is achieved by reintegrating waste materials back into the system as valuable resources. One notable milestone is the successful production of compost from organic waste, which contributes to healthier ecosystems.

Looking ahead, the compost generated will be used in plantation drives organized by Muslim Hands and distributed among local residents to promote gardening and environmental stewardship. “This initiative fosters community pride and responsibility, as residents will see the tangible benefits of recycling their own waste,” Qamar concluded.

The project represents a significant step toward creating a cleaner, greener future for Mirpur and sets a model for sustainable waste management in the region.
