Foreign Office rejects claims of Pakistani mercenaries, demands evidence
ISLAMABAD – The Foreign Office on Tuesday firmly dismissed accusations made by Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, denying any involvement of Pakistani nationals in the ongoing war in Ukraine and labeling the claims as “baseless and unfounded.”
The statement came in response to remarks made by President Zelensky a day earlier, in which he alleged that foreign fighters, including individuals from China, Pakistan, and several African countries, were participating in the conflict on the Russian side.
Zelensky made the claims during a visit to frontline Ukrainian forces in the northeastern Kharkiv region, stating on the social media platform, X: “Our warriors in this sector are reporting the participation of mercenaries from China, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and African countries in the war. We will respond.”
The Ukrainian leader had previously accused Russia of enlisting foreign fighters, including Chinese personnel—an allegation China has denied. North Korea has also reportedly sent troops to support Russian operations in the Kursk region.
In its official response, Pakistan’s Foreign Office said:
“The Government of Pakistan categorically rejects the baseless and unfounded allegations of the involvement of Pakistani nationals in the conflict in Ukraine.”
The FO emphasized that no formal communication or credible evidence has been received from the Ukrainian government to back up such claims.
“To date, Pakistan has not been formally approached by the Ukrainian authorities, nor has any verifiable evidence been presented to substantiate such claims,” the statement added.
The Foreign Office confirmed that Pakistan will be engaging with Ukrainian officials to seek clarification on the matter.
Reaffirming its stance, Islamabad reiterated its support for a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict through diplomatic means, in line with the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter.
