New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Saturday strongly criticised the United States’ military action in Venezuela, describing it as a clear attempt at “regime change,” and said he personally contacted President Donald Trump to register his opposition.
Speaking at a press conference, Mamdani said he spoke directly with the president to object to what he viewed as unlawful actions that contravene both federal and international law. He stressed that his stance was rooted in a principled rejection of externally driven regime change efforts.
Earlier, the mayor took to social media platform X, where he labelled the US operation in Venezuela an “act of war” and accused Washington of openly pursuing regime change. He said he had been briefed on the overnight military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and their planned transfer to federal custody in New York.

Mamdani warned that unilateral military action against a sovereign state violates international norms and carries consequences far beyond the country directly targeted. He noted that such actions could have serious repercussions for the Venezuelan diaspora, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans living in New York City.
Emphasising public safety, the mayor said his administration’s priority was to protect the Venezuelan community and all New Yorkers. He added that city authorities were closely monitoring developments and would issue guidance as needed.
His comments followed reports that the US had carried out a large-scale strike in Venezuela, resulting in the detention of President Maduro and his wife, who were reportedly flown out of the country and are expected to face federal charges in New York, according to President Trump.
