For everyone with a Saturday-Sunday weekend, next week brings an unexpected gift: three days off in a row. Saturday and Sunday will be followed by a public holiday on Monday, 9 November, turning an ordinary weekend into a proper break.

The federal government has declared a nationwide holiday on Monday to mark Iqbal Day, and the Cabinet Division has issued the formal notification to put it into effect.

The closure covers federal and provincial departments, workplaces, banks and educational institutions. Ministries and their attached departments have been told to make sure the decision is implemented in full, so that no office or institution is left guessing about Monday.

The holiday is not a surprise announcement. It follows the annual public holidays calendar approved on 19 January 2026, which already listed 9 November as a general holiday. The notification simply confirms what the calendar had set out at the start of the year.

The day marks the 149th birth anniversary of Allama Muhammad Iqbal, the national poet whose verse gave the Muslims of the subcontinent a message of selfhood and action, and whose work is still read by young people across the country. Special events and seminars are planned across Pakistan to mark the occasion.

For students and employees, the announcement matters for practical reasons too: exams, office work and travel plans can now be arranged around the break. Normal government and business activity will resume on Tuesday, 10 November. Institutions that work a six-day week will still observe Monday’s holiday as notified.
