Motorists could welcome the new year with significantly lower fuel costs, as a substantial reduction in petroleum prices is being considered for the first half of January 2026.
According to sources, authorities have prepared an initial working paper proposing notable cuts across multiple fuel types. Petrol prices are expected to be reduced by Rs10.60 per litre, while High-Speed Diesel (HSD) could see a decrease of Rs8.59 per litre. Kerosene oil is also likely to become cheaper by Rs9 per litre, and Light Diesel Oil (LDO) may drop by Rs6.62 per litre.
The proposed adjustments are subject to final approval by the Ministry of Finance. Once endorsed, the price cuts would bring considerable relief to consumers, particularly daily commuters and transport users.
If implemented, the revised prices would take effect from January 1, potentially marking one of the most significant fuel price reductions in recent months and offering financial breathing space to millions at the start of the new year.
