ISLAMABAD: The PIYAAS Human Rights Organization has welcomed the enactment of the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2026, recently signed into law by President Asif Ali Zardari, describing it as a major breakthrough for the protection of women’s rights in the country.

The organization termed the new legislation a historic milestone in the advancement of human rights, noting that it makes punishable acts such as threatening a second marriage or divorce without a wife’s consent, along with clearly defined forms of psychological, emotional, and financial abuse.

Expressing strong satisfaction over the development, PIYAAS said it was “deeply moved and encouraged” by the law’s approval, calling it a decisive victory for women and a firm commitment to confronting domestic violence and coercive practices within households.

“We appreciate the government of Pakistan, Parliament, and President Asif Ali Zardari for taking this long-overdue and essential step to strengthen human rights, particularly the rights of women,” the organization stated.

PIYAAS emphasized that meaningful progress will depend on effective and consistent enforcement of the law. It urged authorities to introduce strong implementation mechanisms, increase public awareness, provide proper training to law enforcement agencies and the judiciary, and ensure that women have safe and accessible ways to report abuse.

The organization also highlighted that successful implementation will require joint efforts from government institutions, civil society organizations, and women’s rights activists.

Reaffirming its dedication, PIYAAS said it will closely track the law’s enforcement and continue advocating for its proper implementation so that it results in real protection, justice for women, and safer, more equitable communities.
