The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who directed officials to ensure that all parts of the city are connected to the metro network through feeder bus services to enhance accessibility for commuters.
The proposed system is designed to serve around 2.6 million passengers. To ease traffic congestion, authorities have approved the construction of two tunnel sections, with plans to place approximately 17 to 19 kilometers of the route underground.
Spanning 31.5 kilometers from Gakhar to Aimanabad, the project will feature 24 stations, including two underground stops. Depots are planned in Gurjakh, Chanda Qila, and Gondlawala, while a 62-kilometer drainage system will be built along both sides of the corridor.
In a move to promote sustainable energy, solar power systems will be installed at all stations and depots.
Officials also revealed that the project is targeted for completion within 12 months. A modern command and control center will be established to oversee operations and ensure efficient system management.
Maryam Nawaz said the initiative would transform urban mobility in Gujranwala, offering residents a modern, efficient, and reliable transport network while reshaping the city’s overall travel culture.
