NEW DELHI: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 mini-auction will take place on December 16 in Goa, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed to the Hindustan Times on Saturday, bringing the league’s showpiece player auction back to India after three straight editions overseas. “Yes, the auction will be held on December 16,” Saikia said.

According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI’s logistics team has circulated a message to all 10 franchises stating that the auction will be held at the ITC Grand Goa on December 16, with an auction briefing scheduled for December 15. The message asked teams to share how many representatives each plans to send, with a formal communication to franchise owners and chief executives expected to follow. A BCCI source separately told PTI that teams have been informed of the date.

The event will be a mini-auction — the final one of the current cycle — rather than a full squad reset, and all 10 franchises have been asked to submit their final lists of retained and released players by November 15.

Return home after three years
Goa’s selection brings the auction back to India for the first time in four years. The last three editions were staged overseas: Dubai in 2023, the mega-auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in 2024, and Abu Dhabi in 2025. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal had earlier said the board wanted to host the auction in India again but had struggled to find a suitable venue during the busy winter wedding season. “We definitely want it to be here this year, given that it would be a smaller auction,” Dhumal told PTI.

The December 16 date coincides with India’s second ODI against Sri Lanka in Bengaluru. The three-match ODI series is scheduled to begin in New Delhi on December 13 and conclude at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The BCCI has denied reports that the opening ODI’s Delhi venue would be moved, and no change has been announced for the Bengaluru fixture, leaving both events on the same day.

Trades reshape squads before deadline
Trades have already begun reshaping squads ahead of the retention deadline. Rishabh Pant has rejoined the Delhi Capitals from the Lucknow Super Giants for INR 15 crore, while spinner Kuldeep Yadav moves the other way to Lucknow for INR 13.5 crore. The move comes days after Pant stepped down as LSG captain following a dismal season in which the franchise finished at the bottom of the points table.

Pacer T Natarajan was traded from the Delhi Capitals to the Sunrisers Hyderabad for INR 5 crore, while Delhi brought spinner Zeeshan Ansari on board for INR 40 lakh.

The BCCI is also deliberating on the future of the Impact Player rule, which came up during a recent IPL Governing Council meeting, and clarity is awaited on the participation of Australian players. Australia are scheduled to tour India for five Tests next year before heading to England for the Ashes, with several leading players also expected to feature in the 150th anniversary Test against England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from March 11 to 15.
