J&K Medical Interns Resume Stipend Protest Over Delayed Hike
شیئر کریں:

Hundreds of MBBS and BDS interns at government-run hospitals across Jammu and Kashmir went on an indefinite strike on Tuesday, alleging the Omar Abdullah-led government had failed to implement a promised stipend hike despite a written assurance given about a month ago, according to The Hindu and The Telegraph India.

The interns are demanding their monthly stipend be raised from ₹12,300 to ₹30,000, the outlets reported. The Hindu said the strike resumed a day after talks between intern representatives and government officials, including the officer on special duty to the health minister and the director-general of finance, failed to resolve the demand. According to The Telegraph, the interns had called off an earlier nine-day agitation on September 8 after the government promised to settle the matter within a month; they say more than 40 days have since passed.

CM approves ₹25,000 hike; formal order awaited
The Daily Excelsior reported that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has approved an increase in the monthly stipend from ₹12,300 to ₹25,000. A senior government officer told the newspaper that the file had been forwarded to the Health and Medical Education Department for completion of formalities and that the formal order was likely to be issued on Wednesday. The New Indian Express similarly reported, citing sources, that the approval came hours after the strike began.

The interns, however, have refused to end the agitation until the formal order is issued, saying they would not call it off on verbal assurances. All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) J&K president Dr Mohammad Momin Khan told the Daily Excelsior the strike would not be called off until formal notification, while joint secretary Mohammad Tasadduk Kawser said the agitation would end only after the official order was issued and implemented.

In the evening, interns held candle marches within the premises of GMC Jammu and GMC Srinagar, with similar demonstrations at the Doda, Rajouri and Kathua medical colleges, the Daily Excelsior reported. It added that the agitation involves interns from GMC Srinagar, SKIMS Srinagar and the Baramulla, Handwara and Kupwara medical colleges. The New Indian Express noted that J&K Congress leader Deepika Pukshar Nath backed the interns’ stand, urging them not to call off the strike until a written order is issued.

The interns have also expressed concern that the approaching Darbar Move, the seasonal shift of government offices from Srinagar to Jammu, could be used as another reason for delay, according to The Telegraph. The Daily Excelsior reported that emergency services remained operational and that the interns had kept working after earlier assurances to avoid disrupting patient care, but warned of rallies, hunger strikes and possible withdrawal from emergency duties if the order is delayed further.
