Srinagar’s autumn tourism is set to receive a major boost with the opening of the new Chrysanthemum Garden, where around 3.5 lakh flowering plants have been planted. The bloom is expected to continue until early December, according to Director Floriculture, Gardens and Parks, Kashmir, Mathoora Masoom.

Speaking to reporters in Srinagar on Thursday, Masoom said the garden had been developed with expanded flower beds, vibrant floral displays, water features, pergolas, selfie points and improved facilities for visitors. Officers and gardeners of the department worked collectively to complete the project despite weather-related challenges during preparations.

“This is our dream project, and we want the importance and popularity of our Chrysanthemum Garden to be exactly the same as our Tulip Garden. We do not want any season of Kashmir to be dull. Spring will be associated with tulips and autumn with chrysanthemums,” Masoom said, according to the Kashmir News Observer.

According to the director, the garden has been developed with expanded flower beds, vibrant floral displays, water features, pergolas, selfie points and improved facilities for visitors. The project, she said, was a collective effort by officers and gardeners of the department, who worked through weather-related challenges to get it ready for the season.

Masoom said the department’s aim is for the Chrysanthemum Garden to reach the same popularity as the Tulip Garden, giving every season its own identity: spring for tulips and autumn for chrysanthemums. The valley’s chinar trees, which turn crimson and gold in autumn, already draw sightseers, and the new garden adds a dedicated floral attraction to the season.

Autumn beyond the tulip season
The garden has been designed around chrysanthemums, with chinar, maple and ginkgo trees adding to the colourful autumn landscape. The flowers could remain in bloom for around one-and-a-half months and may continue until December 5 or 6, depending on weather conditions.

The development reflects a wider push to strengthen Kashmir’s tourism appeal beyond the traditional spring tulip season. By creating a dedicated autumn attraction, the floriculture department aims to draw visitors during a season when the valley’s chinar trees turn crimson and gold, extending the tourism calendar and supporting local businesses through the colder months.

Masoom expressed hope that the garden would attract a large number of visitors during the autumn season. Tourism officials have repeatedly stressed the importance of year-round attractions for the valley’s economy, and the new garden is being presented as a key step in that direction.
